It covers a Class E crime, past or present, except certain sexual assaults. It also covers some marijuana crimes committed before January 30, 2017. The old crime of engaging in prostitution has its own rule. A victim of sex trafficking or sexual exploitation has one too. That victim may seal any crime that was largely a result of it. Maine has no expungement.

For most, you wait four years after you fully serve your sentence. Since then, you must have no new conviction, here or elsewhere. You must have no case dismissed after a deferred disposition. You must have no pending charges. For the old prostitution crime, the wait is one year. You must also have no conviction under the related sections the law lists. A trafficking victim may file at any time. The court may skip that hearing if the State agrees.

Once sealed, the record is closed to most who ask. You may answer them as if it did not happen. If you are convicted of a new crime later, you must tell the court. It then unseals the record. That rule does not reach the prostitution and trafficking seals.
